Detailed Description

Detailed Description

This No Wait Access Vatican Tour gets you past long lines at the Vatican Museums, so you spend more time exploring the world’s most incredible art collection and less time waiting outside. Travelling in groups of 20 people or less, we visit all the highlights of the Vatican Museums – from the Sistine Chapel to lesser-known gems of the collection, capping off our tour with a visit to St. Peter’s Basilica.

With commentary from an expert, English-speaking guide you’ll see the Pinecone Courtyard, the Hall of Maps, the Gallery of Tapestries, the Gallery of Candelabra and the incredible Raphael Rooms. Listen as your guide brings these works of art to life for you – pointing out things you never would have noticed on your own and teaching you about the characters behind these great works.

A definite highlight of the tour comes when you will visit the Sistine Chapel. Guided tours are not permitted within the chapel, so your tour guide will have already filled you in on the details with the aid of photographs of the paintings. Take some time inside this world-famous room to pick out the details you heard about – Michelangelo’s boneless self-portrait for example, in which he expresses to the world that he would rather be skinned alive than paint the Sistine Chapel again. As incredible as his work is, it must have been back-breaking – a fact you’ll understand all the better after you learn what it takes to create a fresco.

After getting the fill of the Sistine Chapel, we’ll use the Skip the Line Access again, exiting by a special door which leads us straight into St. Peter’s Basilica and past another long line. See the incredible altar and marvel at Michelangelo’s beautiful sculpture, La Pietà, before heading outside to see St. Peter’s Square.

Every morning but Wednesday the groups will have a guided tour inside St. Peter’s Basilica – on Wednesdays it’s highly likely that the Basilica will be closed to the public for the Papal audience. On afternoon tours our guide will deliver a commentary about St. Peter’s Basilica from St. Peter’s Square before groups enter the basilica to admire it in their own time.

The tour finishes out in St. Peter’s Square where you can admire Bernini’s clever optical illusion, spot the balcony from which the Pope delivers his public addresses and snap photos of the imposing exterior of the basilica.

With this Vatican Group Tour you’ll see all the best of the Vatican Museums in half a day, getting the very most from your time with our No Wait Access and an expert, English-speaking guide.

  • Non-flash photography is permitted throughout the tour, except in the Sistine Chapel where talking and photography are prohibited.
  • The Vatican Museums are among the most highly trafficked sites in the world. With over 5 million visitors in 2011 and numbers rising year-on-year, the museums give rise to a whole new meaning of the word “crowded.” The tour routes are designed to minimize exposure to crowds as much as possible, but be aware that the museums are very busy by nature.

Vatican City - Saint Peter's Basilica Tour, Adult, 10:00 AM (Excellent)

"Tour guide was excellent and the hassle free line entry made the experience so much better than my first visit to the Vatican 20 years ago. Maria Rosaria was very knowledgeable and helpful. She made the experience one to remember and has my highest recommendation."

Vatican City - Saint Peter's Basilica Tour, Adult, 10:00 AM (Excellent)

"Shannon was a fantastic tour guide. Her knowledge and enthusiasm were readily apparent from the very start of the tour. We consider ourselves very fortunate to have had her as our leader."

John O, United States, June 2014

Vatican City - Saint Peter's Basilica Tour, Adult, 02:30 PM (Excellent)

"This is a wonderful experience that is made so much more attractive because the group tour avoids the incredibly long queue outside the museum. The guide was excellent (Rosana) and we thoroughly enjoyed the tour and the wonders on view. It is a tough tour, stamina wise, because of the vast numbers doing it. I would strongly advise against children under 12 years old doing the tour because of the crowd, the heat and difficulty of seeing in such crowded spaces. Nevertheless, it is a "must do" in Rome, but only with a good guide."

Philip M., United Kingdom, May 2014

Vatican City - Saint Peter's Basilica Tour, Adult, 10:00 AM (Excellent)

"Do not do the Vatican tour on your own. It is far too busy and the lines are too long. This tour was perfect to get past the lines and get the background and insight from the guide. David was an excellent guide. I highly recommend this tour if you want to have a good experience visiting the Vatican."

Daniel W, United States, April 2014

Vatican City - Saint Peter's Basilica Tour, Adult, 10:00 AM (Excellent)

"David gave us a very enjoyable experience. He presented his in depth knowledge with an upbeat manner keeping us interested at all times. He was very patient with the group keeping up, especially as one family in our group had a pushchair with them that slowed things down at times."

Edward A, United States, April 2014

Vatican City - Saint Peter's Basilica Tour, Adult, 10:00 AM (Excellent)

"Angela was fantastic and very knowledgeable. The Vatican was incredibly busy and she got us through it. Only comment would be that this is probably not the tour for someone who would prefer to wander through the museums at their own pace."

Anne S, United States, April 2014
