Detailed DescriptionDetailed DescriptionLeave Rome along the Autostrada del Sole, heading south. Halfway to Naples, on a hill to the left, you will see the Abbey of Montecassino, completely rebuilt after being totally destroyed during the Second World War. Then on into the fertile countryside surrounding Naples. Visit an ancient cameo and coral factory in Torre del Greco. Then to Pompeii for lunch at a restaurant and a visit of the excavations. 19 centuries ago during the summer of 79 AD, Vesuvius suddenly re-erupted, completely destroying Pompeii and Herculaneum. The ash and hot gas claimed numerous lives but at the same time preserved the existing environment and a way of life typical of the ancient Roman society at its height. The layer of ashes preserved intact people and everyday items, food and domestic animals. All remained silent and hidden until the first half of the 18th century when regular digs were organized. At the end of the visit continue to Rome with arrival at the hotels or nearest point at about 8:30PM. Customer Ratings and ReviewsCustomer Ratings and Reviews
Naples and Pompeii Tour
"This was a full day tour. We got to Naples and were a bit limited in what we could see here as it was the celebration of the founding of the republic, so big crowds and police everywhere. I was hugely disappointed that we only had a short walk to the square and back in Naples and did not get a chance to look around or even have a stop to take one of the famous pictures overlooking the bay. The tour of Pompei by contrast was very good. The lady showed us all of the "must see" areas and explained it very well. She knew Pompei and clearly enjoyed showing others around it. The included lunch was rubbish. As a solo traveller I was stuck on a table with people who spoke Spanish (to my English) and the decidedly average food took an age to arrive as there were several bus loads of tours who arrived at the same time." "The trip was a full day experience. The stop at Naples was unnecessary - a drive thru the city would suffice. Lunch was fine. The time at Pompeii was good, the guide knowledgeable, but walked a bit fast. He lost us around a few bends. All in all, a lovely day."
