The History of the Moulin RougeAs one of the first cabarets, beginning in 1889, the Moulin Rouge reflected the period in French history when experimentation, a light-hearted view of the world, a rejection of classicalism, and the nonchalance of the Belle Epoque period was at its height. Artistic creativity thrived, as painters and illustrators sought to express this new freedom from the former classical restrictions of the past. Japanese influences, such as seen in the paintings of Lautrec, were at their height. In this time of eccentricity, as well as the beginnings of the Eiffel Tower, the Moulin Rouge was born.
The Cancan GirlsThe "unruly girls" or Chahuteuses were immortalized by Toulouse Lautrec; they were boisterously dancing this new dance, as witnessed by the painter and written about in 1898. Writers of the period thought that these girls, with their famous physical flexibility, were also reflecting their flexible morals. La Goulue was one of the most famous of the Can-can girls; Lautrec added to her immortality through his representations of her in his paintings.

Moulin Rouge Show
"All I expected and more. Going at 9.30 we arrived early fully expecting to queue, but no, taken straight to a table and champagne served. If I had seen the food before going I would booked 7.30 meal option, it looked very good and the dining seats looked well situated. We sat on the side of the theatre on a table for four, the people sitting on the inside probably don't get such a good view, and its really pot luck where you get seated. Well worth the experience." Christopher J, United Kingdom, December 2012
Moulin Rouge Show
"We went to the moulin Rouge about 1h before the show started in order to get a nice table with a good view. However, this was absolutely not necessary, because a table on the balcony with a great view onto the stage was reserved for us! We also got a bottle of champagne, althought this had not been indicated on the booking. Thanks to the Conciergerie for their excellent service."
