Joan Miro, a man deeply rooted in his homeland but with a worldwide reputation
This tour is dedicated to The Joan Miro Foundation opened to the public on 10 June 1975. At a time when artistic and cultural life was certainly minimal, the Foundation brought a refreshing vitality, together with a new, more dynamic concept of an Art Museum in which Miro's art was shown alongside a wide variety of creative works by other artists, a fact that is reflected in the Foundation's full name: Centre for the Study of Contemporary Art.
The Joan Miro Foundation
Between the city and the sea, the Montjuic Hill juts up 170m, offering magnificent views over Barcelona and its port. The hill was urbanized for the second International Exhibition and is both a cultural attraction -including The Joan Miro Foundation- and a sports one with the Olympic Ring and Stadium.
The Joan Miro Foundation guided tour:
Miro was born in Barcelona where he studied and started painting, influenced by the bright colours of Fauvism and broken forms of Cubism. He was a prolific artist and left a great number of works: paintings, drawings, collage, ceramics, and sculptures but also a Foundation to encourage contemporary art and a beautiful, modern, naturally lit gallery to show it, the Fundacio Joan Miro on Montjuic. Built by his friend, the Catalan architect Josep Lluis Sert, it is the perfect setting for a magnificent collection.
Works by Joan Miro
The Foundation's collection currently comprises over 14,000 pieces: 217 paintings, 178 sculptures, 9 textiles, 4 ceramics, the almost complete graphic works and some 8,000 drawings.
The major part of this collection was donated to the Foundation by Joan Miro himself. Other pieces have come from the collections owned by Pilar Juncosa, the artist's wife, and Joan Prats, his close friend and the driving force behind the idea of setting up the Foundation. There have been subsequent donations by Marguerite and Aime Maeght, Pierre Matisse, Manuel de Muga, Josep Lluis Sert, Francesc Farreras, Josep Royo, Gerald Cramer and David Fernandez Miro, grandson of the artist.
An equally valuable part of the Foundation's holdings consists of the works on loan, mainly from members of the Miro family and from the Gallery K. AG founded by Kazumasa Katsuta.
Gift Shop - In addition to articles relating to the current exhibitions and the Foundation’s exclusive branded range, it also sells fashion and household accessories, stationery, educational games, etc., all in the latest modern designs.
Bar-Restaurant - The Bar-Restaurant has a garden terrace in the centre of the building, with seating for 70 persons inside and 60 outside. It offers a varied menu based on mediterranean cooking fused with ingredients and flavours from other countries.
Accessibility - Accessibility nowadays refers not only to architectural barriers but to making people aware that the arts and culture can be experienced through all the senses. The Joan Miro Foundation is working to ensure that all visitors are able to participate in this experience. Culture is a fundamental human right and museums are responsible for providing access to it.
